California Will End Indoor Mask Mandate

California will end its statewide indoor mask mandate on February 15.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the news Monday afternoon, citing a 65% decrease in California’s coronavirus case rate since the Omicron peak. 

The mandate went into effect on December 15, 2021 and was set to expire January 15, 2022. The mandate requires masks be worn in all indoor public settings, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. In the first week of January, Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly extended the mandate through February 15 amid surging cases of the Omicron variant.

NEW: CA’s case rate has decreased by 65% since our Omicron peak. Our hospitalizations have stabilized across the state.

Our statewide indoor mask requirement will expire on 2/15.

Unvaccinated people will still need to wear masks indoors.
