The 49ers have made a blockbuster move at the trade deadline.

Amidst a stretch where San Francisco’s pass rush has been lackluster, they’ve bolstered the defensive line by trading for former No. 2 overall pick, defensive end Chase Young from Washington, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. SF is giving Washington a conditional future third round pick in return.

San Francisco arguably already had the best defensive line talent in the league, and will now add a blue chipper who is just 24 years old, and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020. Young missed time in 2021 and 2022 with injuries, but is healthy and has played well this season. Young has five sacks in seven games with the Commanders in 2023.

Young will join Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave on a defensive line that has Pro Bowl caliber players at every position.

Young is on an expiring contract as Washington did not pick up his fifth-year option last offseason.
