It appears to be another lost season for defensive tackle Maurice Hurst. The 49ers brought him, along with Arden Key, over from the Raiders in 2021, with Hurst expected to make a significant contribution.

Raiders fans raved about him and his performance in training camp reaffirmed that those assessments were accurate. But he was able to play in just two games last season after sustaining a calf injury that just never seemed to heal.

Following a few promising days at the start of camp, his 2022 campaign looks to be over, too.

Kyle Shanahan revealed Saturday that Hurst had torn his biceps, which is a likely season-ending injury. It’s brutal news for a player expected to be a major contributor on the interior of the defensive line.

He’ll have to undergo surgery and may have an outside chance to return towards the end of the season.

Also on the injury list for the defensive line is Hassan Ridgeway, who suffered a quad injury. It’s yet unclear how severe the injury is. That’s in addition to Arik Armstead, who sprained his MCL and will miss a few weeks of practice.

Javon Kinlaw is slated to join team drills for the first time on Saturday, but will be limited, so it’s going to be a fairly thin interior defensive line group, likely meaning some defensive ends will have to slot inside.

Following Saturday’s practice, the 49ers will take Sunday off and return to don the pads on Monday.
