Vaccine manufacturers working on Omicron-specific vaccines may be just spinning their wheels, according to the FDA.

The agency’s Dr. Peter Marks says in spite of the surge of Omicron cases, the variant has yet to establish itself as a “dominant” threat. “We don’t know yet whether Omicron will take hold as the dominant variant over time,” he says. “It could be that we have a very quick wave of Omicron and something else will be left behind it. Until we understand that, we can’t say with certainty what we will do with a variant vaccine.”

However, Marks adds work should continue on developing an Omicron vaccine so “we’ll  be ready in case it does need to be deployed.”

Is everyone making too big a fuss over the Omicron variant?
