Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, turns 77 today (March 1st)! To celebrate, we thought we’d tell you some lesser-known facts about the iconic frontman and share some of his best isolated vocal tracks.
- Before he played in The Who, he was a sheet-metal worker.
- He plays flute, tambourine, harmonica, and guitar.
- As a young man, Roger had a stutter.
- His first band was called The Detours, which he auditioned to be the guitarist for using a home-made guitar.
- Before he joined the band, Roger randomly saw John Entwistle walking down the street, carrying a bass. He introduced himself, and eventually asked John to join his band.
- On May 31st, 1976, The Who made a Guinness Record for “loudest concert,” although it has been beaten a number of times over the years since.
- One time Roger hit Who guitarist Pete Townshend with a guitar, and he had to be taken to the hospital.
