Tom Morello shared how he got his son, Roman, interested in playing guitar by teaching him the first three notes of “Stairway to Heaven” during the pandemic.
Morello leveraged the iconic status of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” to gradually engage Roman in learning the song and eventually the solo.
Morello filmed Roman playing the “Stairway to Heaven” solo and sent it to Jimmy Page, who provided positive reinforcement, leading to a friendship between Roman and Page.
Roman, now 15, has become one of Tom’s closest collaborators, touring with him and contributing to Tom’s new solo album, Everyone Gets Everything They Want.
Morello emphasized the timeless appeal of great music, noting that Roman’s shift from hip-hop and pop to classic rock highlights the universality of music’s quality.
