Grateful Dead has released a live performance of “Viola Lee Blues” from their upcoming album ‘Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA (7/3/66).’
Dead archivist David Lemieux describes “Viola Lee Blues” as the band’s first big jamming vehicle that hit intensely psychedelic peaks during live performances.
‘Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA (7/3/66)’ will be released digitally and as a two-CD set on July 3, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the concert.
The concert featured the lineup of Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir, and was part of Bill Graham’s Independence Ball.
The Fillmore performance was previously available in 2015 as part of the 50th-anniversary boxed set, 30 Trips Around the Sun.
