Dave Grohl moved into Kurt Cobain’s chaotic and squalid apartment in Olympia, Washington, where he lived amidst filth and disorder.
Grohl, feeling homesick and lonely, spent eight months sleeping on Cobain’s couch and observing the intimate relationship between Cobain and Krist Novoselic, which inspired him to write his first acoustic song, “Friend Of A Friend.”
Jenny Toomey of Simple Machines label heard Grohl’s songs, including “Friend Of A Friend,” and suggested releasing them on a cassette, marking Grohl’s debut solo album under the pseudonym Late! as part of the Tool Cassette Series.
Grohl’s decision to re-record “Friend Of A Friend” for Foo Fighters’ 2005 album ‘In Your Honor’ was a nod to his time in Nirvana and a way of looking back while moving forward.
“Friend Of A Friend” serves as a poignant reminder of the simpler times Grohl shared with Cobain and Novoselic, capturing the essence of their friendship that would later shape the rock music landscape.
