Wolfgang Van Halen’s father, Eddie Van Halen, initially focused on teaching him drums before introducing him to the guitar.
Wolfgang credits his drumming foundation for shaping his approach to playing multiple instruments, stating, “I play guitar like a drummer, I play bass like a drummer.”
Despite being largely self-taught on the guitar, Wolfgang acknowledges the value of his father’s drum instruction, emphasizing that rhythm is at the core of his musical instincts.
Eddie Van Halen only formally taught Wolfgang drums, leaving him to learn the guitar independently by studying tabs and replicating his favorite songs.
Wolfgang Van Halen expressed gratitude for his father’s method of waiting for him to master drums before introducing him to the guitar, highlighting the impact of Tool’s music on his drumming skills.
