Former Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen is shedding light on the band’s early years, revealing that late bassist Cliff Burton played a far greater leadership role than many fans realize.
According to Rasmussen, Burton acted as the band’s unofficial musical director during the recording of classic albums like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. While James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich would later be viewed as the band’s leaders, Burton’s musical instincts and knowledge were central to shaping their early sound and direction.
Rasmussen also recalled the band’s humble beginnings, living frugally while recording in Denmark. Despite the challenges, Burton’s influence helped define Metallica’s identity—an impact the band continues to honor decades after his passing.
