By the time of Rumours, Fleetwood Mac used their songs as musical weapons, channeling frustrations from collapsed relationships into their music.
Mick Fleetwood recommended Lindsey Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac after seeing potential in him from their work on Buckingham Nicks.
“Go Your Own Way” by Buckingham is a kiss-off to Nicks, with lyrics like “Packing up/Shacking up is all you want to do” causing tension between the songwriters.
Nicks refuted Buckingham’s claims in the song, stating she never shacked up with anyone while with him and was the one who ended the relationship.
Buckingham’s musical obsession and perfectionism led to tension in the studio, culminating in a physical confrontation between Nicks and Buckingham and the eventual split of the core lineup of Fleetwood Mac.
