Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel has canceled all upcoming concerts, including a highly anticipated tour spanning this year and next, due to a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (N.P.H.), a brain disorder that affects hearing, vision, and balance. In a statement released Friday, Joel revealed that recent performances had worsened his condition, prompting doctors to prescribe physical therapy and a break from touring.
Known for timeless hits like “Piano Man” and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” Joel has been a fixture in the music world since the 1970s. He recently concluded a historic decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden, grossing over $260 million.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” the 76-year-old wrote. “Thank you for your understanding.”
N.P.H. causes a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain, placing pressure on critical nerves. Joel’s team has not announced a timeline for his return to the stage.
