John Mayer says he isn’t going to let a little thing like an injured finger stop him from performing with Dead and Company at the Las Vegas Sphere. After all, he’s got seven good fingers — and two thumbs — left.
Mayer, who recently slammed his left index finger in the door of a truck, says he initially thought he’d be forced to bail on the gig. “The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘I really need that finger in a week,’” he writes on Instagram. “I need all my fingers, but the left index is the team captain of my fretting hand. It will heal just fine, but will be out of commission for a while.”
But instead of pulling the plug on the residency, Mayer’s been taking the only other approach to dealing with this problem: He’s been learning to play guitar without his injured finger. “I have spent every day practicing guitar using the other three fingers and I think I have it sounding pretty good,” he says. “I’ve always felt like every part of me belongs to these shows, and it’s my responsibility to return to the stage.”
Dead and Company kick off the second-to-last weekend of their Dead Forever residency at the Sphere on Thursday.
