Smashing Pumpkins are revisiting their signature ’90s sound with their new song, “Black Stars,” featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The track marks the band’s first collaboration with legendary producer Butch Vig since their groundbreaking 1993 album Siamese Dream. Blending dreamy melodies with layers of distorted guitars, the song captures the atmospheric alternative rock sound that helped define the band’s early success.
The accompanying music video draws inspiration from the upcoming Hunger Games prequel while delivering a nostalgic throwback to the band’s ’90s era. Smashing Pumpkins were no strangers to movie soundtracks during that decade, contributing music to films such as Batman & Robin and Lost Highway. The new track continues that tradition, bringing their distinctive sound to another major Hollywood franchise. The soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release on November 13 through MCA, ahead of the film’s theatrical debut on November 20.
Meanwhile, Smashing Pumpkins are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their iconic double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with an arena tour. The anniversary performances bring the band back to venues similar in size to those they played during their commercial peak in the 1990s. With a new soundtrack contribution and a reunion with Butch Vig, the band is reconnecting with its musical roots while introducing its classic alternative rock sound to a new generation of listeners.
