Dave Grohl described Andrew Gold’s song “Never Let Her Slip Away” as “the most beautiful piece of music ever written” and “maybe one of the most melodically sophisticated songs I’ve ever heard in my entire life.”
“Never Let Her Slip Away” was a massive hit in the UK, climbing to No 5 in the UK Singles Chart in 1978.
Andrew Gold, known for his California soft-rock/pop sound, was a major LA session musician and arranger, playing a diverse range of instruments.
Gold was inspired to write “Never Let Her Slip Away” after meeting and falling in love with actress Laraine Newman, whom he was trying to impress.
The song featured prominent synth parts by Gold, saxophone by Ernie Watts, and backing vocals by Timothy B. Schmit and J.D. Souther, with rumors of Freddie Mercury contributing uncredited vocals.
