Chasta and Baby Huey caught up with Nekrogoblikon backstage at Aftershock to talk about the band’s Bay Area roots and the unusual path that turned a small joke project into a nearly 20-year career. The band revealed that Nekrogoblikon began in Palo Alto in 2006 before eventually relocating to Los Angeles. A video starring John Goblikon later took off online, helping the group land festival appearances before they had even gone on tour.
Nekrogoblikon also broke down the eclectic combination of influences behind their sound, including European melodic death metal, power metal, folk metal, deathcore and electronic music — a combination they now simply call “goblin metal.” The band also discussed their collaboration with Reel Big Fish, the importance of having a distinctive identity in today’s crowded music landscape and how they eventually found a new stride after experiencing lineup changes and growing pains following their initial viral success.
