Bruce Springsteen’s original music video for “Dancing in the Dark” is going up for auction after being rejected and shelved.
The 3/4-inch U-matic master tape comes from former Columbia Records president Al Teller’s collection and features four performances by Springsteen.
Filmmaker Jeff Stein initially directed a version of the music video that was deemed unsuitable due to its sparse presentation without the full band.
The rejected master tape was kept by Teller for over 40 years and contains footage of four separate Springsteen performances.
The rejection of the original video led to the iconic Brian De Palma-directed version featuring Courteney Cox and helped Springsteen become an MTV fixture during the Born in the U.S.A. era.
