A black-and-white film of Hendrix’s 1969 Woodstock set, shot by Albert Goodman, premiered on YouTube Livestream on Aug. 16.
Goodman, a drama student at Bard College, snuck onstage during the closing act and filmed Hendrix from a close distance.
The film captured Hendrix’s performances of “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” from a unique angle.
Goodman showed the tapes to Hendrix after the festival, and they were eventually handed over to the family after 30 years in storage.
Hendrix played with his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows at Woodstock, where he closed the festival on Aug. 18, 1969, in Bethel, New York.
