A new documentary called ‘Summer Tour’ follows two 20-year-old Deadheads, Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Pierce and Annie Dunn, as they travel across America on Dead & Co’s final tour in 2023.
Pierce, who now plays lead guitar in a tribute band called Mason’s Children, shared in the film, “Every single male in my family has served in the military. And I was expected to do the same. And I chose a different path.”
Director Mischa Richter wanted to capture the touring experience through the eyes of Pierce and Dunn rather than create an informational piece about the Grateful Dead. He stated, “I didn’t want to make an informational documentary about the Grateful Dead. I wanted a focus.”
The documentary features footage from Dead & Co’s 2023 tour, showcasing performances at venues like Fenway Park. The band, which includes members like Bob Weir and John Mayer, continues to carry on the music of Jerry Garcia to new generations.
The film was premiered by Richter at Telluride in 2025 and has since been screened at various locations, with more screenings scheduled for the future.
