Dave Grohl praised The Pixies’ debut album ‘Surfer Rosa’ as the “perfect record” and highlighted Steve Albini’s production and Black Francis’ songwriting.
The Pixies played at Madrid’s Mad Cool Festival before their 2026 anniversary tour, where guitarist Joey Santiago and drummer David Lovering responded to Grohl’s praise with humor.
Santiago and Lovering agreed with Grohl’s assessment of ‘Surfer Rosa,’ with Santiago jokingly wanting to know what Grohl’s exact words were.
“He said ‘perfect’?” he asked.
When it was confirmed, he continued jokingly, “Good, good, good, as long as he didn’t say ‘great’, then he’s right.”
The Pixies named ‘The Colour and the Shape’ as the perfect Foo Fighters record, praising producer Gil Norton, who also worked with the Pixies on multiple albums.
Norton produced six Pixies albums, starting with ‘Doolittle’ in 1989, and also worked on Foo Fighters’ ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ from 2007.
