Wind Up threatened not to release EVANESCENCE’s debut album, “Fallen,” if they didn’t add a male voice to lead single “Bring Me To Life” to make it more radio-friendly.
Amy Lee resisted the label’s pressure to add a male voice to the song, feeling it was a concession and a watering down of their unique sound.
The label wanted the band to hire a rapper for 10 out of 12 songs, which Amy vehemently opposed, leading to a fallout fight.
The compromise was to feature Paul McCoy from 12 STONES on “Bring Me To Life,” which became a hit and helped the band gain recognition.
The song’s success led to concerns about being perceived as a one-hit wonder, but the band managed to release other songs that were well-received.
