Metallica surprised fans by performing Sir Tom Jones’ controversial hit “Delilah” at the same venue where choirs were barred from singing the song three years earlier.
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) banned the song from being played before games at Cardiff Principality Stadium due to its lyrics depicting violence against a woman named Delilah.
Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo led a tribute to Sir Tom Jones by performing a rowdy rendition of “Delilah” at the venue, defying the ban.
Sir Tom Jones defended the song’s controversial lyrics, stating that it should not be taken literally and that the chorus is the key element that people focus on.
Sir Tom expressed pride in hearing the song sung at rugby games and emphasized that the song’s narrative should be viewed as a performance rather than a literal depiction of events.
