Grateful Dead will release a vinyl edition of Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA (7/3/66) to mark the 60th anniversary of their Independence Ball performance.
The 3LP-set will be limited to 6,600 copies and feature a custom etching on the final side, available exclusively from Dead.net, with a digital streaming and download option.
The live album was recorded by Owsley “Bear” Stanley and produced by Grateful Dead Legacy Manager and Archivist Dave Lemieux, and will also be released on 2CDs on July 3 from Rhino.com.
The performance on July 3, 1966, includes early live recordings of rare originals like “Tastebud,” “You Don’t Have To Ask,” and “Cardboard Cowboy,” as well as a cover of Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Gangster Of Love.”
Jesse Jarnow, in the album’s liner notes, describes the band as “profoundly young” during the Independence Ball performance, noting their raw and thrilling sound, reflecting on the band’s evolution and the significance of their 1966 recordings.a
