Tomas Lindberg, known as “Tompa” and revered as one of the most influential voices in extreme metal, has died at 52 after battling Adenoid cystic carcinoma. Lindberg first made waves in the late ’80s with the pioneering Swedish death metal band Grotesque before going on to front genre-defining acts like At The Gates, Lock-Up, The Great Deceiver, and Skitsystem.
With At The Gates, Lindberg helped shape the Gothenburg melodic death metal sound, most notably on the landmark album Slaughter of the Soul. Known for his ferocious stage presence, lyrical intensity, and relentless drive to explore new musical directions, Lindberg earned deep respect throughout the metal world. His influence helped inspire generations of heavy musicians, and he leaves behind a powerful legacy that will continue to resonate.
