Steven Wilson’s spatial audio remixes of the Guns N’ Roses albums ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘Use Your Illusion II’ were shelved by the band, despite being a full remix of nearly 40 songs.
Wilson says the band didn’t like the idea of their music being in spatial audio, and vetoed the mixes.
The project is currently unreleased and unheard, sitting on Wilson’s hard drive due to band politics and disagreements.
Spatial audio creates a ‘3D sound experience’ that feels like instruments are coming from different directions and distances, as opposed to the left-right setup of a stereo mix.
Wilson still believes in the potential of spatial audio technology in a live setting, suggesting that more venues with spatial audio installations could lead to more immersive live shows for artists.
