The Grateful Dead is celebrating its 60th anniversary with various events, including a 60-CD box set and IMAX screenings.
Dead & Company will livestream a show in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Aug. 3, with an opening set by the Trey Anastasio Band.
The Grateful Dead Movie, co-directed by Jerry Garcia and Leon Gast, will be shown in select theaters on Aug. 14, marking its first time on the big screen in eight years and its first time in IMAX.
The band’s archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux described the IMAX screening as “the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times.”
Bobby Weir mentioned that the band was considering reuniting for the anniversary before bassist Phil Lesh passed away, leaving the possibility of a trio with two drummers.
