The greatest drummer of all time? It’s John Bonham, according to Black Sabbath’s Bill Ward.
Ward and Bonham were born within a month of each other and grew up less than 20 miles apart in the West Midlands. They knew each other from their early days on the Birmingham music scene, where Ward was impressed by Bonham early on.
Despite a potential rivalry, the two drummers maintained a mutual respect and friendship, with Bonham even acting as best man at Tony Iommi’s wedding in 1973.
Ward praised Bonham as “the best drummer in the world” and acknowledged the lasting legacy of Led Zeppelin and Bonham’s contributions to music.
