Mike Campbell shares new revelations about his relationship with Tom Petty and his musical journey in his autobiography “Heartbreaker: A Memoir.”
Campbell rejects the idea of the Heartbreakers continuing without Tom Petty: “I like working with the guys, but to call it the Heartbreakers with another guy or another person up there, I’d be like, ‘No, it’s not the Heartbreakers.’”
Early on, Campbell asked for a bigger share of the band’s proceeds, to which Tom Petty responded, “But I’m Tom Petty,” – but he eventually gave Campbell a larger share for his production help.
When management cut the Heartbreakers’ pay after Full Moon Fever, Campbell ensured the band stayed together.
Tom Petty once critiqued Campbell’s solo music, advising him it wasn’t good enough, a moment Campbell now sees as helpful in his growth as a musician.
Campbell is already working on the next album with his solo band The Dirty Knobs.
