Some of the biggest names in rock are paying tribute to the late Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who died Sunday at the age of 71.

In a statement posted on the band’s Facebook: “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today. Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

Here’s what Rossington’s fellow rockers had to say:

James Hetfield: “Thank you for bringing me so much joy with your guitar playing and songwriting in one of my all-time favorite bands”.

Bret Michaels: “He brought a lot of great music & many great memories to so many people”.

John 5: “Ever since I was a kid I have loved Lynyrd Skynyrd & Gary’s guitar playing.”

Kenny Wayne Shepherd: “One of the best to ever do it.”

Joe Bonamassa: “This has been worst week in my memory. Literally everyday another legend or friend has passed away. Rest in Peace Gary.”
