This sort of news is an inevitable part of training camp.

According to the Mercury News’ Cam Inman, 49ers tight end Jordan Matthews suffered a torn ACL and will go on injured reserve, ending his season.

Matthews was seen leaving the team’s facility on crutches and with a cast around his right knee.

He had converted to tight end over the last few seasons after coming into the league as a productive receiver for the Eagles. He caught for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns over those first three years.

San Francisco has retained him at various stages over the last three seasons, and kept him on the practice squad for most of the last two years. He’d looked more comfortable at tight end this training camp.
