“Smells Like Teen Spirit”…But With Ukuleles

YouTube, @UkuleleOrchestra.

Is it possible to head-bang while playing the ukulele? Yup. Absolutely. If you’ve ever played one, you know it’s true. It’s basically a tiny guitar, with fewer strings. And different tuning. And in its own way, it rocks. Truly. Some people in the universe have spent their lives getting to know the ukulele and eventually perfecting it, just like any instrument. And some have even joined ukulele bands. And some of those bands have chosen to play rock n roll, which is how we stumbled upon this video of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain from back in 2007, off their album Precious Little. They’re covering Nirvana’s classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and we love it. The album also features “The Theme From Shaft” and “Psycho Killer,” among others. If you played in a ukulele band, what would make your covers album? We’re thinking Black Sabbath, Metallica, and maybe some Van Halen to start.
