Santa Rosa has recently announced that funds from the cancelled annual “Live at Juilliard” concert series would be repurposed in the form of $2,000 grants for local musicians.

Like most events last year, the concert series celebrating local music in Santa Rosa’s Juilliard Park was cancelled among public health concerns. The six-week event had allotted $36,000 in 2020 to pay artists, sound technicians, and other technical workers in the music industry. However, with the event cancelled the money was left unspent – until now.

“We were able to redirect the funds from the canceled concert series to provide grants to support local musicians who lost income from not being able to perform,” Tara Thompson, arts and cultural manager for the City of Santa Rosa, told the Press Democrat.

However, the money is not going necessarily to the artists who would have performed, but instead the city has opened up a general application process for resident musicians of Santa Rosa. The criteria for applying are as follows:

  • Is a practicing musician able to demonstrate a sustained commitment to my work, career, and a public audience;
  • Is experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • Is 18 years of age or older; and
  • Is a resident of Santa Rosa, CA

Live at Juillard (Park) performances are normally slated for every Sunday in the months of June and July, however if the city is unable to host the music series in 2021 another round of grants may open up to the community.

“We probably will not be able to do the ‘Live at Juilliard’ series this summer either, so we are looking at possibly doing a second round of grants to make funds available to more musicians,” Thompson said. “This all comes from our desire to support local musicians.”

The application deadline is Sunday, April 11, 2021 11:59pm PT and applicants will be notified of their application status in mid to late May, 2021.
