Alternate Version of Van Halen’s ‘Hot for Teacher’ Discovered

An alternate version of “Hot for Teacher” is among dozens of previously unheard Van Halen tracks that have been discovered in Warner Brothers’ archives. “There’s different lyrics all the way through it,” says engineer Brian Kehew, who found the lost tracks. “Dave’s original vocal had different words. That is a strange one, because Eddie plays bass on that one. And on the intro, which has that great guitar part, he actually doubled it on the bass. But probably, they couldn’t quite play it live, so they didn’t keep it on the record. But they did keep the rest of Ed’s bass track on the actual record.” Among the other tracks unearthed by Kehew is “Bring on the Girls,” a song that later morphed into “Beautiful Girls,” and “Voodoo Queen,” which later became “Mean Street,” Kehew says. It’s unclear whether Warner Brothers has plans to release the rare recordings.
