The Adult Swim presents: Mr. Pickles Thrashtacular Tour featuring Exodus and Municipal Waste made a Bay Area stop at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco this past Sunday night. For anyone that knows me, knows how much I love Municipal Waste. I have been a fan of them for over the last ten years and see them every time they come through the Bay Area. On top of it, they are playing a show with Bay Area thrash legends Exodus along with another local, upcoming heavy metal band, Hell Fire, this was a show I couldn’t miss.

I made it a point to get to The Regency Ballroom early to see Hell Fire kick off the show. After dealing with a long line to get some Municipal Waste merch, I caught most of Hell Fire’s set. It’s been a few years since I last seen Hell Fire live. This was the first time I have seen Hell Fire with Jake Nunn on guitar/vocals. The band’s performance was badass, watch the video I filmed below and you will see how Hell Fire’s style is a fresh take of the classic New Wave of British Heavy Metal sound. The members of Hell Fire looked like they were having so much fun on stage and the crowd was really into them. Very cool seeing an awesome local band getting a chance to play a large venue for their hometown crowd.

Municipal Waste was up next and after the lights went out, the screen behind the drum kit played a commercial for Mr. Pickles reminding everyone season three of the TV show debuted that night. The members of Municipal Waste came out and started tearing through their setlist, first song they played was “Breathe Grease” from their latest album “Slime and Punishment.” The great thing about this co-headline tour with Exodus, Municipal Waste was able to play a longer set and rip though hit song after hit song. For a band that has been around for 17 years, with six albums and a handful of EPs and split albums to date, I forgot how many songs Municipal Waste has in their catalog. About ten years ago Municipal Waste was apart of the second wave of thrash metal. I have a been a big fan of their style, a mixture of thrash metal, crossed over with hardcore punk. Plus, with their fun, party theme lyrics, all of this combined made them stand out compared to a lot of their peers. I’m so happy to see them kicking ass to this day. It’s not to often at my older age that I get into a pit, but I made my way through the moshing and crowd surfing to get a close up view of the band. Lead singer Tony Foresta was on his game, I even loved his fun banter with the crowd in between songs. Lead guitarist Ryan Waste killed it by shredding his way through every song and making it look so easy. New second guitarist Nick Poulos has been a great addition to the band, adding a more fuller sound to the band. I always love watching bassist Land Phil live, his headbanging along with the fat, bouncing tone of his bass makes him the secret weapon of the band. Drummer Dave Witte is a beast behind the kit, he blasts through every song and sets the tone/speed for the band. I loved their setlist, mixture of new songs and older stuff. I always get sad when their set ends because I want more.

Exodus rounded out the night and what can I say that hasn’t been said before. Exodus are one of the original King’s of Thrash Metal and every time they play a hometown show they remind everyone just that. Everyone in attendance was in for a treat, right out the gate they played the title track from their legendary debut album “Bonded By Blood.” Also, it was great seeing Gary Holt playing with his band. Gary Holt has been very busy playing with Slayer and does his best playing with Exodus when his schedule allows it. Gary posted on his Instagram page last week that he will be playing this entire tour with Exodus, which I’m sure all fans loved to hear. The entire band sounded heavy and the entire crowd was going nuts. What a fun night. I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to see all three bands live again in the near future. Cheers.
