Steven Seaweed's first brush with fame came in the eighth grade when he was runner-up in the Maryland state spelling bee championships...at
the time, lifelines weren't invented yet, and the young Weedboy tripped up on the
word "marshmallow".
Campfires have been painful ever since.
His early musical training came about at the legendary Fillmore and Winterland
here in San Francisco, where his mother used to drag him around in a backpack
while grooving to the likes of Cream, Creedence and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Mom regularly showed up with the infant Weed at be-ins in Golden Gate Park
and Grateful Dead acid tests. He was a Summer of Love baby all the way!
One of the youngest radio announcers of all time, Steven Seaweed got his
first break at a small free-form station in carmel-by-the-sea-weed when nobody
wanted to work the midnight shift on New Year's Eve, 1972. Our boy held up
his hand when the program director asked for volunteers, then showed up at
midnight with FCC license in hand and promptly tracked all six sides of George
Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh.
The next few years were lost in a smokey haze, but there are reports of interviews
with the likes of Peter Frampton, George Thorogood, and Roger Daltrey, and
something about actual VINYL records being spun on, what did they call them?
...turntables?
After that first gig, where he went from weekends straight to program director (Editor's
note: In those days, program director meant handing out the records and
posting the weekend shifts), Weed went straight to the big time...the
legendary progressive rock station in San Francisco, KSAN, the Jive 95!
when they went country, so did the Weedman. This time, we're talking another
legendary station, KFAT, the "wide spot on the dial," where he
delighted in playing such classics as "Moose Turd Pie".
To make a long story short, FAT radio went "Top 40" and once again,
so did our boy with the cowboy boots. Then it was back to the big city
and "the
Rocker," KRQR. That lasted for a glorious 13 years, until they changed
to a woman's name and interrupted the first-ever live broadcast from a
bicycle when Steven Seaweed broadcast his show from California AIDS Ride
3. He decided
to get the format change out of the way BEFORE he did California AIDS Ride
7 this time, and is now the proud occupant of the 10am to 3pm slot at the
greatest radio station of all time ... 107.7 THE BONE!
