God of War III
8 out of 10 stars
The God of War series, in my mind, has been flawless up until number 3. Like everything in life, some things have trouble living up to a certain reputation. Other things just focus on what works and try to take it to another level. God of War III follows in the footsteps of Spiderman III, Transformers II and any Early 90’s Batman sequel. There’s something about this game that just doesn’t sit right for me. Now…don’t get me wrong. This game lives up to God of War fashion and really takes advantage of its new HD widescreen format. It may just be TOO MUCH at this point. The gameplay is pretty flawless. The new weapons Kratos yields are great additions to the game. The graphics are unparalleled. So…what’s my problem? Why can’t I jump on the bandwagon here and give it a perfect review? My problem with God of War III lies in the storyline. God of War I and II were all about revenge, and in good revenge tales, you align yourself with people that will help you accomplish your goal. God of War III is complete and total revenge. No one is safe from the wrath of Kratos, not even your past allies. Kratos ends up betraying everyone in order to reach his final goal. It just…didn’t sit right with me while playing this game.

Am I upset that I spent $60 on this game? Hell no. Will I pick it up and play it again? Of course I will. Does the storyline bother me that much? Not really. I’d love to go on record and say that for the one thing this game lacks, it gets everything else I want in a game right. The visuals in the game are downright EPIC. It’s cinematic…Do video games give awards on Cinematography? Because that’s what it feels like. You are engrossed in the level of beauty that is the visual eye candy that is God of War III. You are essentially the lead character in a Michael Bay movie. The voice acting is also top notch, including Malcom McDowell, Rip Torn and Kevin Sorbo (returning as Hercules). God of War III really didn’t spare any expense in putting the pieces together for a great game. One thing the God of War series has also done really well is incorporate different game play levels with every new installment. This time around, it’s a “flying up and down a tunnel” which certainly broke up the button mashing portion of the game for a bit. The enemies in GOW III are challenging will take you a few times to figure out how to beat. All in all – God of War III over delivers on almost every element you’d expect from it.

God of War III in the end is a lot like Megan Fox, all the perfect elements are there, there just isn’t much depth to it. So, as I stand in the middle of the video game arena and shout to the 4 people who will read this review, “Are you not entertained”, let me answer myself…Yes I am. This game is GREAT, I doubt anyone who picks up this game will NOT be entertained or wowed by the overall awesomeness that is God of War III. The story just fell short for me. Revenge is a dish best served cold and should probably be told over 2 titles, not 3. Give us a new story or give us another chapter towards redemption. Give me the great gameplay I’ve come to expect and put it in a new title for us, I think…at least for me…God of War has finally run its course. 8 out of 10.
