Tom Petty: Official Cause of Death was Accidental Overdose

It’s been months since the passing of rock and roll legend Tom Petty.  Only a couple of weeks before his 67th birthday, Petty was found unconscious in his home in Malibu and then rushed to the hospital in Santa Monica, CA. He was pronounced dead on October 2, 2017.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner released a statement officially ruling the cause of death as accidental overdose. Petty had been taking Fentanyl, oxycodone, generic Xanax and other pain medications.

“Despite this painful injury, he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury,” Petty’s wife Dana and daughter Adria wrote in the statement. “On the day he died, he was informed his hip had graduated to a full-on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his overuse of medication.”
